Director's Welcome Message

According to lessons gained from the advancement of industrialised countries, National Science Technology and Innovation Policy recognises that the attainment of Ghana to the middle income status requires a solid science based, technology and innovation (STI) environment.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), of which CSIR-Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute of Ghana (CSIR-PGRRI) belongs, is one of the institutions set up to address issues on scientific and technological advancement. The CSIR has a vision of "using the transforming power of S&T for wealth creation". The role of CSIR-PGRRI towards this vision is to undertake effective conservation and use of PGR for food security and sustainable agricultural development and related research and to disseminate and commercialize research outputs and services. To be able to achieve this CSIR-PGRRI undertakes demand-driven research, builds capacity and promotes the application of technologies for sustainable management of Ghana’s plant genetic resources for the benefit of society.

The changing global issues on plant genetic resources and the environment and the needs of the country provide persistent and perennial problems in the PGR sector that warrant a re-thinking and adoption of innovative strategies for sustainable solutions. In view of  these the Institute undertakes regular collection and conservation of the germplasm of the plant genetic resources in Ghana, Characterize, evaluate and document the collection, encourage the use of the materials by Breeders, Researchers and Farmers, and serve as a national coordinating agency, to engage in research relevant to its mandate. SWOT analysis forms a major part of the review process, through which the external and internal environments are diagnosed.

Five strategic developmental objectives upon which the Institute's research and development agenda respond, and also used as pillars to support the achievement of the mandate, vision and mission of the of the Institute are:

  • Develop technologies for the efficient conservation and utilization of orthodox and recalcitrant PGR materials;
  • Strengthen human resource capacity and capability;
  • Identify, establish and strengthen inter institutional collaboration and linkages;
  • Identify and access external donor funding and commercialized research results and;
  • Gather, process and disseminate information relevant to PGR management in Ghana.

To be able to achieve the five strategic objectives, five strategic thrusts outlined in the 2015-2020 strategic plan (Research for development, Resource mobilization, Visibility, Capacity building and Systems management) are being used as the vehicle for achieving the strategic objectives.

It is hoped that achievement of the strategic developmental objectives would help raise the Institute to achieve its vision of becoming a centre of excellence in sustainable plant genetic resources conservation and utilization for wealth creation.
