Academic Background

I had my BSc degree at the University of Ghana, Legon, majoring in Crop Science in 1985. I continued with my post-graduate studies culminating in MSc and PhD degrees at the Tottori University, Japan in 1990 and 1993, respectively.

Experience

Over the past 26 years, I have shown great technical and administrative competence in farmer-oriented technology development and transfer that manifested itself in coordination of several projects. As a result of my performance, I was promoted to Senior Research Scientist in October 1999, Principal Research Scientist in July 2006 and eventually to Chief Research Scientist in July 2009. My administrative progression is as follows: Director: CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI): July 1, 2010 – 2021; Acting Director: CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI): September 1, 2008 – June 30, 2010 and Deputy Director: CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI): June 1, 2007 – August 31, 2008. To date, I have authored or co-authored 37 refereed journal articles, 3 book chapters, 21 edited conference proceedings and 27 conference abstracts. I was a part-time Lecturer in Plant Pathology at the University for Development Studies, Tamale. Between 1994 and 1996, I helped to review the undergraduate syllabus and was instrumental in incorporating a course on Techniques in Plant Pathology. I have supervised 2 undergraduate students in 2002 and 2003 and also external examiner to assess five PhD Theses for the University of Ghana, Legon. I was also internal assessor for CSIR R&D Promotion of candidates to Senior Research Scientist, Principal Research Scientist and Chief Research Scientist.Currently, I have been granted a two-year Post-Retirement Contract as Chief Research Scientist tenable at the CSIR-Plant Genetic Resource Research Institute with effect from 1st September, 2021.

Administrative Experience (Director) CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI): July 1, 2010 - Date

  1. Responsible for the day-to-day administration of CSIR-SARI
  2. Responsible for establishing effective linkages with relevant institutions and agencies within and outside the CSIR
  3. Responsible for the coordination of prioritized research of the institute under the broad guidance of the Director-General
  4. Ensures promotion and transfer of technology to industry and agri-business
  5. Coordinates research funding initiatives
  6. Provides services and inputs to determine research priorities as well as formulate and implement science and technology plan
  7. Has overall management and development of the human resource base of CSIR-SARI
